MoMA presents a minimalist Chess set

in Gaming Gadgets

This is the Modern Chess Set, and, as you can see in this illustration, this Chess set is able to fit very compactly in this tiny box.

You will notice the pawns are these little cubes that fit together well. The rooks are a little larger and do the same thing. The bishops and knights have some sort of symmetry, to create a rectangular solid, I like how the king and queen dovetail together, as it is rather poetic, in a Freudian way.

I am assuming that the chess board is not there, but it looks like it would fold up and fit inside this box. In fact, I just checked my Source, and there is no board included. I’m sure you have probably seen this on the photo, but the pieces are made of maple or cherry wood. Remember that white goes first.

Keychain Retro LED Camera with sound

in Led Gadgets

cam-led

People are always purchasing those silly little keychain lights.  Most of the time they could barely be described as attractive or interesting.  If you’re going to carry it as a keychain it should have a little personality.  If you’re a big time photography or old camera lover, then this keychain could do double duty for you.  It’ll show off your favorite hobby and the flash doubles as a handy little flashlight.

Golden Robot USB Drive looks familiar…

in Usb Gadgets

It’s funny how you can see something and it just so strongly reminds you of something else you’ve seen before, like this very subtle Golden Robot USB Drive that I just can’t seem to put my finger on.  Every time I glance at it I just hear this annoying voice yammering off a bunch of ridiculous survival statistics.  It’s just the strangest reaction.  Clearly this robot is nothing more than a gold robot and that’s it.

Setting Fires With a Giant Electric Blower

in Home Gadgets, Lighter

looftlighter
This weekend, I’m going to be sparking up the grill with the Looftlighter, an electric firestarter that looks like an oversized curling iron, sounds like a hair dryer, and gets a good-sized pile of charcoal briquettes ready to grill in just a few minutes.

I’ll admit I was skeptical about the $80 Looftlighter, which comes from Sweden and whose name, I believe, must be pronounced with as much Nordic accent as you can muster. It’s basically an air blower tucked behind a heating element. The idea is that it delivers a focused blast of hot air out the front. It’s hardly the “flamethrower” I’d been led to believe it was, however, and an initial test in the Wired offices proved that it was incapable of doing much more than charring the edges of a business card.

Canon's 4k Multipurpose Camera concept weakens knees, shoots video. We go hands-on! (Video)

in Photography

You're looking at Canon's new 4k "Multipurpose" concept, a wondrous amalgamation of still and video cameras pumping 60 frames per second at 4k resolution out of an 8 megapixel 2/3-inch CMOS sensor. Yep, we said 4k video, approximately quadruple the resolution of 1080p. We had a chance to go hands-on with the prototype at Canon Expo 2010, and believe us when we tell you that it's really, really sharp, both in terms of hardware and the images it produces. The hardware is essentially a giant SLR body packing a

Samsung Galaxy Tab preview

in Tablet Gadgets

After a week of painful teasing, Samsung has come clean about its Galaxy Tab 7-inch Android tablet. We got the nitty gritty specs, along with some quality time with the device, and we like what we're seeing on both fronts. Follow along after the break as we break it all down, including some hot hot video of the thing in action!

Update: Added Samsung's official press release, product images and first video ad for the Galaxy Tab.

Creative Sound Blaster Wireless Rock [Insert Hilarious Post Title Playing Up Rocks And 'Rocking Out' Here]

in Music Gadgets

Creative Sound Blaster Wireless Rock (Image courtesy Creative)
By Andrew Liszewski

I usually only expect to find rock-disguised speakers in the pages of a Hammacher Schlemmer or Sharper Image catalog, built and designed in some name-less overseas factory. But this little monolith comes from Creative under their Sound Blaster brand. You can use it as a standard speaker if you feel like running cables to your backyard (not that you have to use it out there) or it will communicate with Creative’s Sound Blaster wireless music system, making things a whole lot more convenient.

Pop-up Microlite illuminates less advanced remote controls

in Home Gadgets

There is just something about viewing your favorite movies and TV shows in a dark room, with plenty of delicious popcorn and a large amount of fizzy drinks to keep you entertained throughout the duration. One thing that might be a pet peeve of people would be having to find a light source to illuminate a remote control whenever they want to fiddle with the settings. Of course, you can always settle for the more expensive option of purchasing a backlit remote control, but for those who think that there is no need for such extravagance can always settle for something more economical – we’re talking about the Pop-up Microlite, a new micro-sized L.E.D. light which can be stuck on remote controls in order to provide illumination for buttons as well as text, handy if you’re in a room that is completely dark or has extremely dim lighting.
